Alaska

Glaciers, whales and the Inside Passage — the one North American itinerary that rivals Europe for scenery.

Season

May – Sep

Typical length

7 – 14 nights

Wildlife

Peak Jun – Aug

Cruise ship sailing an Alaskan fjord beneath snow-capped mountains

Alaska divides into two shapes of trip. Round-trip Inside Passage sailings from Seattle or Vancouver stay in sheltered water, call at Juneau, Skagway and Ketchikan, and spend a morning in front of a tidewater glacier. One-way Gulf sailings between Vancouver and Seward or Whittier add Hubbard Glacier and open the door to a land tour — Denali, the railroad, the interior.

The wildlife is not a marketing promise here: humpbacks feed off Icy Strait through the summer, bears fish the salmon runs from July, and eagles are so common they stop being remarkable by day three. Choose a balcony if the budget allows — you will use it more here than anywhere except the fjords.

Juneau

Juneau

Docks downtown

The only US state capital with no road in. Mendenhall Glacier is twenty minutes away, and the whale watching out of Auke Bay is the most reliable in the state.

Skagway

Skagway

Docks in town

A gold-rush town of 1,000 people that swells tenfold on a four-ship day. The White Pass railway climbs 3,000 feet in twenty miles.

Scenic cruising — no landing

A national park the ship enters under permit. Margerie Glacier calves through the morning; the best viewing is from the bow, not your balcony.

The most totem poles anywhere in the world and 150 inches of rain a year. Creek Street is a five-minute walk from the ship.
