Turquoise water and white sand at Anguilla in the Caribbean

The Caribbean is the most forgiving cruise there is: short flights, warm water every month of the season, and ports where the day plan can be as simple as a beach and a taxi. It is also where the biggest ships live, which is why families sail here — the sea days are the point, not the price you pay to reach the next port.

The distinction worth understanding is southern versus eastern. The southern loop sails from Barbados or San Juan and reaches the smaller, greener islands: Grenada, St Lucia, Dominica. The eastern loop leaves from Florida and works the busier, drier ones. If you have cruised the Caribbean before and found it samey, you were almost certainly on the eastern loop.

Most southern loops start here. Carlisle Bay is a ten-minute taxi and one of the few genuinely good beaches walkable from a cruise terminal.

Seven Mile Beach is the easy call, Stingray City the memorable one. Go ashore early — the last tender back always fills up.
