Norwegian Fjords

Scenery you watch from the ship rather than go ashore for, with long light and small, walkable ports.

The fjords are the one destination where the best hours are spent on deck, not ashore. Ships sail into Geirangerfjord at breakfast and Nærøyfjord in the evening light, and the right cabin — a balcony, port or starboard depending on the run — is worth more here than on any other route we sell.

Ports are small, safe and easily walked, which suits older travelers and anyone who dislikes the organized-excursion machinery of the Caribbean. Pack for four seasons in a day: it can be 68°F in Flåm and hailing two hours later up the Flåmsbana railway.

Bergen

Bergen

Docks a walk from Bryggen

The Hanseatic wharf, the fish market and the Fløibanen funicular are all within a mile. Rain is likely; it does not much matter.

Geiranger

Geiranger

Tender port

The sail-in past the Seven Sisters falls is the reason to choose this itinerary. Ashore, the Dalsnibba viewpoint is the one excursion worth the money.

Flåm

Flåm

Docks in the village

A village of 400 people at the head of Aurlandsfjord, and the start of the Flåmsbana — the steepest standard-gauge railway in the world.

Tromsø

Tromsø

Docks in the center

Three hundred miles inside the Arctic circle, with the midnight sun in June and a genuine shot at the aurora from September.
