Northern Europe is two trips that share a season. The Baltic is a capitals cruise: Copenhagen, Stockholm, Tallinn and Helsinki, usually one city a day with overnight sailings between them, and a museum-and-old-town rhythm that suits anyone who found the Caribbean short on history. Norway is the opposite - small ports, empty landscape and the best hours spent on deck as the ship threads a fjord.
Both start from Copenhagen, Stockholm, Amsterdam or Southampton, so an American traveler flies in for these; the reward is two weeks where the ship does the traveling and the hotels are already unpacked. Pack in layers whichever route you choose. A Baltic June can be shirtsleeves at noon and a fleece by the evening sail-away, and a fjord day can be warmer at the water than up the mountain.
Copenhagen
The Baltic's home port. Ships use several quays - the closest is a walk from the Little Mermaid and the citadel, the farthest a shuttle ride - and the city itself is flat, compact and easiest by bicycle or on foot.
Stockholm
The approach through the archipelago is one of the great sail-ins anywhere, so be on deck for it. Ships dock at quays a short ride from Gamla Stan, the medieval island at the center of the city.
Tallinn
The best-preserved medieval old town on the Baltic, a short walk from the cruise quay. Walls, towers, cobbles and cafes; no tour needed.
Bergen
Norway's fjord capital and the usual gateway for the western fjords. The Hanseatic wharf, the fish market and the funicular are all within a mile of the quay. Rain is likely and does not much matter.
