A transatlantic crossing is the cruise for people who like the ship. Twice a year the fleets that spend summer in Europe and winter in the Caribbean move between the two, and they sell the move: a dozen or more nights, one way, with a run of sea days in the middle that no other itinerary offers. Eastbound crossings leave Florida and New York in April and May; westbound crossings come home in October and November.
The logistics are the thing to understand. You fly one way, the ship covers the other, and there are only a handful of ports in between. Choose a crossing for the sea days, not in spite of them - the lectures, the dining and the long afternoons are the trip - and look for one that adds Bermuda or the Azores if you want a landfall in the middle.
Fort Lauderdale & Miami
The usual American ends of a crossing. Both are drive-to ports for much of the Southeast, with long-term parking at the terminals, and both put you a short ride from an airport for the flight home - or out.
Bermuda
The mid-Atlantic stop. Ships dock at the Royal Naval Dockyard on the western tip, with a ferry across the Great Sound to Hamilton and the pink-sand beaches of the south shore a bus ride away.
Ponta Delgada, Azores
The Azores, a third of the way to Europe: green volcanic islands, crater lakes and hot springs. Ships dock beside the old town of Ponta Delgada; the lakes at Sete Cidades are the day trip.
Funchal, Madeira
Madeira's capital, a favorite last call before the European mainland. Ships dock a walk from the old town, the cable car to Monte and the levada trails are right there, and the harbor is a natural amphitheater.
