The town of Sandakan, once claimed to have the greatest concentration of millionaires anywhere in the world during its heyday as a timber centre, began on its present site in 1879, after an earlier settlement accidentally burned down. Kota Kinabalu, the state capital of Sabah, is a relatively new town; the original one was destroyed during World War II.
