Trieste to Athens

Trieste is the capital city of the Friuli Venezia Giulia region in northeast Italy. A port city, it occupies a thin strip of land between the Adriatic coast and Slovenia’s border on the limestone-dominated Karst Plateau. Italian, Austro-Hungarian and Slovenian influences are all evident in its layout, which encompasses a medieval old city and a neoclassical Austrian quarter.

The principal seaport and third largest city in Croatia, Rijeka charms with its Habsburg grandeur and multitude of cultural offerings. For marvelous views of the city and the surrounding river valley, visit the 13th-century Trsat Castle and explore its bastions and ramparts. Tiny, red-tile roofed Hvar is tucked into a protected cove on Hvar Island, one of the more fertile areas on Croatia's beautiful Dalmatian Riviera. Vineyards, fragrant herbs and fields of lavender blanket the countryside, and it's ingredients like these that have turned Hvar into a glamorous resort city favored by those seeking fabulous beaches in a quaint setting. The 16th-century, Venetian-built fortress overlooking the city is a reminder that invaders have long favored the island. Another intriguing site is Hvar's Franciscan Monastery and its museum full of religious artifacts. For a pleasant respite, relax in the Pjaca, the limestone town square.

Sarandë is a resort on the Albanian Riviera, in southern Albania. Sandwiched between the Ionian Sea and hills of olive groves, the town is on a horseshoe-shaped bay, edged by beaches and a promenade. In the center are the archaeological remains of a 5th-century synagogue, later an early Christian basilica. Intricate floor mosaics are still evident. The 16th-century Lëkurësi Castle is on a hilltop above the town.

This capital of the island of Cephalonia resides in a sheltered bay along Koutavos Lagoon, where you might catch a glimpse of a loggerhead turtle. The stone obelisk of the Drapano Bridge and the Lighthouse of Saint Theodore are two of the island's distinctive landmarks. Discover relics from the Mycenaean, Hellenistic and Roman periods in the city's archaeological museum.

Chania wears its past on its sleeve.
